Interview with Colleen of Lulu*s.com & Discount Code!!

I have been tweeting and dropping hints on Facebook for a while now, and I am so excited that this day has finally arrived! My dearest readers, I have snagged an interview with Colleen Winters, (co) owner of Lulu*s.com! The daughter half of the mother-daughter team of our favorite online shop graciously agreed to a telephone interview with me. Below she shares some really exciting news about what's in store for Lulu*s.com, what her days are like, and an inside look to the Lulu*s Exclusive label. Also, she's provided a 15% discount code for all of you!

Amber:  Colleen, thank you so much for taking the time to do an interview with you! I know that my readers are really  going to enjoy this!

Colleen: Oh of course, of course. Where are you located out of? I'm curious.

Amber: Oh! I'm actually in the Bay Area. I saw that Lulu*s is located in Chico?

Colleen: Yeah we're about 2.5 hours away.

Amber: Are you from California?

Colleen: Yep!

Amber: Born and raised or...?

Colleen: Born and raised. Actually born and raised here in Chico, California. I left for college, and I traveled quite a bit and then decided to come home, and that's when my mom and I started the business.

Amber: Awesome! Yes, I was reading online that Lulu*s is a mother/daughter company. I love that.

Colleen: Yes, it's nice to work with family. It's worked for us. We're actually really good - we balance each other out. We have different roles to compliment each other.

Amber
: And you're the marketing director for Lulu*s as well?

Colleen
: I actually gave myself that title. I head all the marketing - it just felt kinda weird to put "owner" as the signature. [laughs]

Amber: Did you always know that you wanted to go into retail?

Colleen: No, but I had always been a thrift store junkie, vintage clothing has always been a passion of mine - I walked graduation in a vintage dress. My mother and I had always bonded over shopping,  so we decided to take the next step. So that was kind of the pathway for that. And then my nickname is Lulu so...

Amber: So, tell us what an average day is like for you.
Colleen: Well I wake up very early because I do all the marketing, and we work very heavily with the magazines, like the editorials. I usually wake up around 5am, because a lot of our contacts are in New York. I get like 600 e-mails a day -

Amber: WOW

Colleen: Which is absolutely insane. It's kinda like the whole day trying to keep track on those, keep on track of the sample requests coming in. I have a really good assistant who helps me. And, I am a mom  - I have two kids, so I am always on my Blackberry, running around, running them to school, coming into work, working, setting up contests with blogs, checking in on how Lulu*s is portrayed out and about via Twitter, or Tumblr, or our Facebook where we do lots of contests. We're working on a new website right now, that's close to being finished. It's going to have a lot more bells and whistles, which is very exciting.

This morning I worked directly with the buyer here. And then I also work directly with the graphic designer, and with the photo shoots, and we also have a buyer in LA and an art director there as well. We did a big photo shoot this week, so taking pictures, figuring out which ones are going to be up, communicating through e-mails, and then again working here with the buyer in our office.

Amber: Wow..

Colleen: So, that's mostly my day.

Amber: That is fascinating. And pretty amazing too. What time do you get to go home, and kick up your feet so to speak?

Colleen: I never kick up my feet, it's very sad. [laughs] I'm kind of a workaholic. But you know, you get really passionate about your business. Both my mother and I are very involved owners.  You know you see other businesses where the owners aren't totally there, and it just doesn't run as well.I don't watch TV. I'm not one to just hang out - I would rather be spending that time with friends or family.

Amber:When is the last time you went to bed thinking "Wow, I can't wait to do that again tomorrow"?

Colleen: Well that's the cool thing about being in business, because I really love what I do, and I have always been passionate, and I have always loved what I do. I can't imagine myself doing anything else.

Amber: You know, I have been blogging for about three years now, and I was writing a post the other week where I saying how I honestly can't imagine my life now without my blog. I love it - it's something that's always on my mind. I'm always looking for new ways to bring something new to my readers. It's really awesome when I talk others like you, who say the same thing: "I can't imagine doing anything else".

Colleen: Right! Because you're passionate. We're passionate. And you know it's funny that you mention it, because I think one day when I don't have Lulu*s, I think I'd like to be a blogger. I think it seems cool. I hope that my passion goes that way next.

Amber: Are there any perks that come with being the co-owner of Lulu*s? Any free Jeffrey Campbell's, or tickets to Fashion Week for you?

Colleen
: Yes, there are! You know it's kind of funny because I'm not usually the one to take them. I mean I do own Jeffrey Campbell's, and I have gone to shows, and then of course owning your own store you always have access to anything. It's funny though, because when you're in it, you don't want it as much. Of course when you are outside looking in you are insatiable. You know what I'm saying? It's interesting. It's a different perspective. But there are lots of perks!

Amber
: I think it would be like Christmas for me in your warehouse or sample room! I'd probably go completely crazy.

[Puppy barks]

Colleen: We brought in our puppy today, and my son is just going crazy.

Amber: Awe how cute!

Colleen: Yeah it's fun.

Amber: So what are some of your goals for Lulu*s?

Colleen: We're working on really building up Lulu*s and building up the brand. We're going to expand the Lulu*s label, we're making our own cuts, having a manufacture, creating our own designs, exclusive pieces, that kind of thing. Also as we get bigger we're able to have better buying power, and get better cuts. We also are looking into making our shopping more of social experience.

Amber: And for your exclusive pieces, are those items that you actually have someone designing for you, in house?

Colleen: Usually we design them in house, yes. My buyer that we have here, and then myself we come up with the designs, and  then we send the designs to LA, then my buyer there puts together swatches, and then the sample itself. We then have a model physically try it on to make sure the length and the fit is right. Then we pick colors. So it's done by us in house.

Amber: So is it some what of a group effort with everyone there in house? Working on the design together?

Colleen: Yes. It definitely a group effort on the designs, and on the buying as well.

Amber: Well, this is really amazing to hear! I am really going to be keeping an eye out for your exclusive pieces, and for your your in-house designs as well. I am going to be keeping a very close eye for those! I know my readers will be very excited to learn about this as well.

Colleen: Yes, it's very exciting. And we have already designs out, but we haven't really been letting people know that they are exclusive.

Amber: Well thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to do an interview with me Colleen! I know that my readers are going to absolutely love this.

Colleen: Thank you so much Amber.

Sheer Blouse, Layered with Lace

H&M sheer blouse, F21 lace top and skirt, CK flats, YSL makeup bag

This week I came across a woman who had beaten the odds. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer, she went through chemo, and came out a survivor. A short time after conquering that destructive disease, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. This time her days are numbered. She had come into the boutique I was in with her husband and small child to pick out an outfit for a family photoshoot that may very well be her last. With her joy and laughter, an outsider would never have known.

While she was being helped, a pregnant woman, due in 4 weeks entered the store.

The entire situation struck me hard. So hard that I had to step off the floor a moment and brush back tears.  I have no words of wisdom or deep insights. No revelations or discovery. What I can tell you is that for me, that moment, that day, will be forever ingrained. It has changed me in ways I do not yet know.
Take joy in life. Please, be kind to one another. You never can never know the darkness another may be in, and what light a small act of kindness can bring.

Smart is Sexy Sunday's : Pathways

When I was a little girl, my "bed time stories" used to come from Astronomy: Discovering the Universe. Each chapter focused on a different lesson. I would learn about the massive storm on Jupiter ("the size of our planet?" "Yes!"), atmospheric pressure, and about the light of stars. Not your traditional bedtime ritual, I'm sure. However I loved it.

When we moved to Hawai'i, my biggest obsession was visiting the Mauna Kea Summit Observatory. With the clear skies of Hawai'i, I could point of the alignment of planets and stars. The windy skies of Waimea were forever changing; clouds soaring by, rain that came and went...rainbows.

Today that love has blossomed into a passion for physics, philosophy, mathematics and metaphysics. I love asking "how" "what if" "how do you know that you know" and sometimes..."wtf?".
Today for Amber's Mouthwash Smart is Sexy post, I wanted to give you some images to contemplate. For me, this is a "how freaking amazing is this?!" moment.
Enjoy!
These two photos below are photos of neural pathways. Neural pathways are part of your nervous system in the brain. Different neurons serve different purposes. Some travel longer distances than others. However, they all use a pathway.

These two photos are of different galaxies in our known universe. Quite similar! Galaxies, which are made up of stars, gasses, dust and stellar remnants - all held together by gravity and the all-illusive dark matter, are still somewhat of a mystery to us. Much like our brains, there are still many things for us to learn about these celestial formations.

Whoever said "the universe is inside you" might have had something. Of course, we also have the universe all around us, in several senses of the word. Just ask designer Christopher Kane. Curiously, his items seem to have their own gravitational pull -  It's just a shame that the dark matter in my wallet doesn't produce the funds to purchase these masterpieces.

Have a beautiful Sunday!

Rust Blazer and Gap Wedges

Well my dear readers, I finally felt it this morning! That unmistakeable crisp in the air. I stepped outside, thinking it was going to be the usual 76 degrees, and it wasn't. I actually needed this blazer, and towards the end of today, my legs felt a bit bare. This is lovely. Fall is on it's way!

Audrey 3+1 dress, Forever 21 blazer (love the color!!), Coach bag, Gap Pierre Hardy wedges

How sad is it that I didn't wear these wedges all summer? For shame. I think I could spruce them up a bit if I changed the fabric that ties around the ankle.

Now that fall is here, there are a few things I am looking forward to. Things like the corn maze in Petaluma. It's this amazing corn field that was planted earlier in the year, and for the month of October they create an intricate maze that you have to find your way out of. Get lost for a few hours? Days? Not to worry! There's food (corn)!
With fall now being here I also have the excuse to drink my favorite drink: salted caramel hot chocolate. Hmmm....

EDIT: for those of you who follow the calendar, you may have noticed that today was supposed to be a guest post. The person never came through!

Wonder Wednesday: Amberie!

Hi readers!!
I am so super excited to show you the photos from the new Amberie 2012 season! I have been working on these jewelry pieces and floral hair crowns for a while now, and finally, here they are.

This time around, I took it from beyond shooting pieces in my tiny studio, and actually created a full-blown photoshoot. I styled the shoot, chose and reviewed models portfolios, did the make-up, and even did the photography, and the editing. My lovely sister Dominique, took the photos of me.

I am so proud of how the Amberie photoshoot went, and I am even happier to be able to share the results with you.

Jennifer of I know, Right? Was such a sweetheart, and actually interviewed me! Click here to read the Amberie Interview.

When the Aldo bag takes over

It seems that my Aldo bag has been quite the busy bee of influence here in my closet. To be fair, I had the shoes long before I had the bag, but still.

See, when I got dressed this morning I didn't intend for an all orange outfit. Yet when I left the house I couldn't help but smile: My boyfriend is going to love this! I thought. Why? Well. When Fermin and I first started dating, he was quite opinionated on my style. A little too opinionated, if you know what I mean. Then one day he told me about a favorite outfit he used to wear back in high school: Orange shirt, orange jeans, and suede orange shoes. After that story, I told him he was no longer allowed to criticize. THAT outfit would always be my "get out of jail free" card. Forever.

Until today.

But see, I tied it off with a neon yellow skinny belt. So I'm okay, right? Right?

Wishing you all a wonderful day!

French Lessons: Le Café

The French, much like a large portion of Europe (well, except the Brits) and Americans take their coffee seriously. I mean, there's the French Roast, the French Press...

And then there is this.

Le café, by Oldelaf.

The song is about a man who wakes up in the morning and takes his usual cup of café. Only to have his wife catch him on his way out the door, and ask him to have a coffee with her before he leaves for work. He arrives to work early, is bored has yet another café...and then his secretary arrives and brings him...you guessed it!
What ensues is absolute caffeinated hilarity.

Please note the iv bag.

Have a wonderful Sunday Lovelies!

Lush at First Sight

Lush blouse, Banana Republic tank, Forever 21 belt and skirt, Calvin Klein flats.
There is something so wonderfully whimsical and relaxing when you find an item that fully exemplifies who you are. It could be a piece of furniture, a table cloth, a dress... For me, it's a blouse. When I first saw this Lush blouse, it was love at first sight.
The scooped neckline, billowing sleeves, over all sheerness and fishtail hem, all had me at hello. Of course I have it tucked into a skirt, so you can't get the full effect. You know how that goes.

The skirt and the belt are both from Forever 21. Do you remember back in the early 2000's when Forever 21 was only made up of cheap polyester skanky dresses and everything in the store was pink, black and tan? They have come a long way since then: now they carry Miu Miu inspired prints.

I have been pairing this belt with almost everything in my closet: I'm pleasantly surprised that 90% of the time, it works! A major bonus? It cost me $1.50. The skirt I got for less than $9.

My accessories. I count lip color as an accessory. The lip shade above is as intense as the belt! I like the little play on words: (I'm an) Enchantress 365 (days a year).

Indian Summer, Audrey 3+1 Dress

Well fellow Californians, this is quite the surprise isn't it? I'd have to say that this is the quintessential Indian Summer. As I type this it is 94 degrees outside. Fall? What Fall? Perhaps in spirit, but certainly not temperature.

The sister duo at Liv Fashion Boutique were so sweet to gift me this beautiful Audrey 3+1 dress ( I got to pick out my gift)! The pattern is so darling: flowers and butterflies.

I decided to make a photo op out of going to get the mail. Somewhat reminiscent of my Laundry Day. I've been having fun trying different layers with this dress: denim jacket, rust colored blazer (as seen on my Facebook), suede boots, heels...
I guess for now we could call it "planning ahead" for when the weather decides to cool down. I'm ready for layers!

Well, at least this dress has ventilation! Is it cooling down for where you are?
